![]() "Wait!" A new voice called and I looked to see a man in a fine waistcoat running over. "Dang, not even a half pence for my help?" I muttered as began to leave the scene. The guard only huffed as more arrived to take the man away. Before he could aim it at the criminals head I pushed it aside and it fired into the dirt, "Don't be hasty, he was never violent," I said firmly. The thief began to struggle and the guard reached for his pistol. It was cold and calculated, "thank you sir!" The guard said as he reaches to apprehend the man. You'd think I'd have more sympathy for a fellow thief but I wanted this towns favor. A guard chased after him and I quickly realized the situation.Īs the thief passed me I simply stuck my leg out and he fell over. As I walked through town looking for a quick job I spotted a man running out of the country store. There were some coins in the pocket of my new jacket and I used them to take a river ferry thirty miles down to the next town which is where fate would lead me to Fraser. It wasn't honorable, but I stole new clothes from a forgotten wash bucket.īut I knew they'd search this town so I burned my old clothes and continued on. I traveled for three days in the thick woods, scavenging for food and resources before I finally came to a small town. So as soon as darkness fell I was on the move again. Every noise woke me, but I never saw guards. I covered myself with branches and moss and slept in a hollow tree trunk when the sun came up. ![]() All I had was the clothes on my back and my will to live. I refused to follow the main road, using the forest for cover. I truly felt like a feral animal as I traversed the woods. Once they realized I was gone the manhunt would begin. I only had a few hours to put considerable distance between myself and the asylum. I ran, because I didn't know what else to do. The months after my escape have been a blur but somehow I still remember it all. I'm shocked at how quickly Fraser was able to make his way into my life. "Thank you," I say quietly and close my eyes. "Oh don't say that," Fraser begins playing with my hair, "you're not a burden," "I can't believe you put up with this," I mumble as I sink back into the bed. Then he's right back to holding me, "you can go back to sleep if you want, I won't go anywhere," "Take all the time you need," he says and I pull away from him just long enough to lift the blanket so he can get under it as well. "I have to be strong or I'll break," I hold back the lump in my throat as Fraser runs a hand up and down my back. "He can't hurt you here, I've got you," Fraser sits down on the bed next to me and waits till I rest my head on his shoulder before wrapping his arms around me, "you don't have to be strong in front of me," ![]() What else could it be but a dream? The asylum is hundreds of miles away and I have not seen it's lead doctor in at least a month. "It was just another dream," I try to compose myself though shallow breaths. Suddenly the bedroom door bursts open and my roommate runs in, "Y/n it's ok, you're safe! You're not at the asylum," Fraser tells me, it's not the first time he's going through this routine with me. My heart races as I take account of everything around me. I look around frantically half expecting to see my old cell walls. The light is almost painful but I find I'm unable to blink, "did you really think you could escape me?" Arioch asks as an ice pick swings down at my eye.Ī scream rips through my throat as I sit up in bed. Then a single light shines down on my face. The table is cold, like the icy hands of death coming for me. Even if my muscles could move the restraints would stop me from running. In the darkness all I can do is listen in frozen terror.
